The Irene Woods Foundation works with educators and school boards in the Greater Montreal region to offer individualized academic support at no cost to families. Education is a human right; financial circumstances should not determine a child’s educational future. Educational equity is our goal and the full realization of student potential is our reward.
What We Do

-

The focus of the Irene Woods Foundation goes beyond academics; we aim to nurture confidence, encourage a love of learning, and help students reach their full potential over the long term.
Why We Do It
Many capable students fall behind simply because they cannot afford tutoring or academic support. Educational opportunity should not depend on family income. It should not be limited by systemic inequalities. A Quebec-based nonprofit organization, The Irene Woods Foundation provides targeted academic support through tutoring to students who need it most. We do this in partnership with schools and educators in the Greater Montreal area. We draw on deep, proven educational expertise developed over decades, through the leadership and experience of Irene Woods, founder of Kells Academy. The Irene Woods Foundation applies best-in-class academic knowledge to a new, philanthropic purpose.

There is currently no other initiative in Montreal combining targeted academic intervention, school-board collaboration, and innovative delivery methods for the benefit of students from vulnerable environments. The Irene Woods Foundation fills a clear and urgent gap.
Why Equity in Education Matters
Education in the Greater Montreal region is facing growing challenges — and students from underserved communities are feeling the impact most acutely.

Children in at-risk environments are more likely to fall behind academically, with learning gaps emerging as early as kindergarten. Limited access to tutoring, academic support, and stable educational resources means these early challenges often deepen over time. Too many students simply do not receive the individualized support they need to succeed.

The lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have only intensified these pressures, especially for families without access to academic support.

These challenges do not reflect a lack of ability or potential — they reflect unequal access to opportunity. With the right support at the right time, Montreal’s students can close learning gaps, rebuild confidence, and achieve long-term success.

The Irene Woods Foundation is a Canadian education nonprofit that aims to help bridge that gap and improve equity for all, helping to ensure that opportunity is not determined by financial circumstance. The Foundation is built upon a sustainable, scalable model that delivers consistent tutoring, measurable outcomes, and long-term academic advancement, including improved grades, graduation outcomes, and access to higher education.

Access to education is a right we support through funding and by leveraging our extensive network built over close to 50 years in Montreal education. Each contribution helps improve educational equity for Montreal students.
Our Approach
The Irene Woods Foundation works hand in hand with schools and schools boards in the Greater Montreal region to identify opportunities for impact and develop inclusive, community-based education programs. This ensures that support reaches those who will benefit most. Families are engaged through a clear application process, with schools remaining active partners in monitoring progress and outcomes.

The Irene Woods Foundation combines in-person tutoring, online programs, and emerging AI-supported learning tools to maximize reach and effectiveness. This blended approach is designed to be a game-changer in terms of scale, personalization, and results.

We pay for educational support so that families don’t need to.
